wwday1 cschelugui The International World Water Day is celebrated each year on March 22nd  since 1993. The day is meant to focus attention on the importance of water for human and national development. The day also provides an opportunity to generate awareness about water-related issues, and take actions to make a difference.

This year’s event was held at Mwasera Girls School, in Voi; Taita Taveta County. The theme for 2018 was “Nature for Water” – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century, and the Chief Guest was Water CS, Mr. Simon Chelugui.

The CS said that this year’s theme “Nature for Water” was very appropriate given the challenges related to unpredictable nature resulting in extreme weather conditions currently being experienced in the country, from drought to floods and vice versa. He added that nature based solutions are the answer to the World’s Water problems. The CS said that the Ministry planned to implement the Mzima II water project in Coast region which will inject 65,000 m3/d while Mwache dam is expected to inject 186,000m3/d.

Most importantly, the CS said that he planned to launch the National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority soon. “According to the 2009 Kenya Population Census, only 0.8 per cent of the urban population uses rain water. However, with proper harvesting mechanisms for runoff water, and storage, rain water can greatly supplement piped water and reduce urban floods.” Said the CS

On his part, the PS, Ministry of Water & Sanitation said Nature promotes a sustainable way to normalize the cycle of water, reduce harms of climate change and improve human health through planting trees to replenish forests and restoring wetlands.

“As we celebrate the World Water Day in our country today, we must remember that the ensuring of quality compliance in supervision and over sighting construction of water projects is also of utmost importance.” Said the PS. NWCPC team participated in the event. The Board was represented by Directors Mrs. Halima Kiniti and Mr. Moses Ndwiga, while Management was led by Ag. MD Dr. Eng. Ali Hassan accompanied by GM Construction- Eng. David Gitau and GM, CLS CS Justus Wabuyabo. Several staff attended the event too where they created awareness about the services of the Corporation.
